The first Coronado Veterinary Hospital was built in 1941 by Dr. Stewart Dingwall, on the corner of First and B Avenue, where Burger King is today. The only way Dr. Dingwall could get the financing to build was to ensure the hospital plans could be converted to a service garage if his veterinary practice was unsuccessful. The first hospital consisted of one small exam room, one small office, and a reception area in front. A small, one bedroom apartment which included a kennel was located in the back of the building. The kennel area was the center of activity for treatments, boarding, grooming, X-rays, surgery and other procedures. Approximately 20 dog runs were located behind the building.
Dr. Dingwall practiced for a few years, then leased the practice to Dr. Hugh Rockwell. He later sold the practice to Dr. Harlan Case.
In 1952, Dr. Paul Smith Jr., a senior veterinary student at Colorado State University, bought the practice from Dr. Case. Dr. Case worked at the hospital for one more year until Dr. Smith graduated. Dr. Robert Jones, a fellow classmate, joined Dr. Smith to work part time.
In 1959, Dr. Pat Malone, a 1953 Colorado State University graduate, moved from Rapid City, South Dakota to work with Dr. Smith. Dr. Malone bought the practice in the early 1970's. Dr. Smith continued to work with him at Coronado Veterinary Hospital until his death.
In 1973, Dr. Monte Kelly, a 1971 Colorado State University graduate, joined the practice, and became a partner in 1979. Dr. Malone and Dr. Kelly also owned the Silver Strand Veterinary Hospital in Imperial Beach, formerly owned by Dr. Lester Fouelschow.
In 1983, The Port District, owners of the land the hospital was on, decided to redevelop the northern end of Coronado. Drs. Malone and Kelly then obtained the site at 150 Orange Avenue, and designed a state-of-the-art veterinary hospital. Construction began in 1983, and the hospital opened in November 1984. The Silver Strand Veterinary Hospital was closed when the new site opened.
In 1997, Dr. Jo Beaty, a 1981 Kansas State graduate, started working with Drs. Kelly and Malone. In 1998, Dr. Malone sold her his half of the practice. She was Dr. Kelly's partner until early 2007, when the call of Montana took her back to the ranch she so loved.
In May 2007, Dr. Elizabeth Stone bought Dr. Beaty's half of the practice and became Dr. Kelly's partner. Dr. Christy Walker currently works part-time with Dr. Kelly and Dr. Stone.
